2019 sees the fifth year of the Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Excellence Awards. This year we received 14 case histories for our consideration. After an initial evaluation of the abstracts and full review of those case histories which made it to the second round, we are pleased to present the nine finalists in this anthology.

All these case histories demonstrate innovative and creative examples of knowledge management or intellectual capital implementation, covering a wide range of applications from initiatives in the public sector, business and education. It is interesting to note the increase in contributions to the competition concerning KM/IC initiatives in the public sector, at regional and city levels.

The KM initiatives which are presented in this book cover a wide range of topics including connecting capturing IP in software, educational institutions with businesses, Urban Regeneration and using KM in the energy industry. There are projects which are looking at the importance of knowledge management in increasing social responsibility in students, improving disaster management and how the Police can best utilise their knowledge. The case histories illustrate a diverse group of ideas from countries including Italy, Iran, Poland, Portugal, Malaysia, Sweden, the UAE and the UK.

The final winners of the 2019 Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Awards will be announced at the end of the 20th European Conference on Knowledge Management, which is held this year at the Universidade Europeia de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal in September 2019.
